What’s New for Kitchen Design in 2017?

As the year ends, it’s always an exciting time to look to the future to see what latest trends are anticipated in 2017. Your kitchen is the centrepiece of your home, it’s the hub of family life and you want it to be modern and inviting. We’ve been looking at kitchen designs, textures, colours and styles which are expected to be popular next year.

Cabinets for Kitchens

In 2017 we’ll see a shift towards bolder industrial type materials and less traditional wood designs. Don’t be surprised to see metal and ceramic cabinets, that look strong, impressive and cutting edge. As well as being extremely hardwearing, they’re also functional. As for hardware, we’re seeing more imaginative materials being used in the form of cabinet door pulls made of leather and hammered finished handles.

Colours and Finishes

While white has always been the most popular colour because of its clean-cut appeal, a new trend’s emerging for totally black or dark grey. If you think it might be too overpowering and that dramatic black just isn’t for you, consider bright colours, sunshine oranges, cornflower blues and vibrant yellows. These colourful combinations mixed with monochrome tones of more neutral colours, such as the more traditional white, grey and black will still look impressive. 2017 will be the year of two-tone for kitchen furnishings. This involves a layered look where the upper part of the cabinetry may be one shade and the lower set another. The two-tone theme could be extended to your kitchen island, so that it’s a different colour to everything else.

Multifunctional Kitchens

A kitchen island will help you to solve your storage problems. Traditionally they’ve housed drawers, but now there’s a move towards open shelving. The side closest to the cooking area of the island may house closed cupboards and drawers but if it faces out to an open plan eating area, then why not consider open shelves? Your island doesn’t have to be surrounded by tall stools. This will be a real feature when guests sit down to eat and your open shelves will become a talking point at the dinner table. It means you can display design ornaments, dishes, drink ware or even floral arrangements. It gives you the ability to stamp your own personality on your kitchen, but be warned it does come with one drawback, the need for extra dusting!
